Most engineers skip this part but it decides whether the leak detection loop works. Start with pipe size. A DN50 or DN80 main line suits most commercial landscape zones. A DN100 or DN150 line feeds larger turf blocks or dust suppression systems. Match the meter body to the pipe. Do not downsize the meter because it creates a pressure drop.


For conductive water, pick an electromagnetic flow meter. It has no moving parts and handles dirty water with solids. For a temporary check on an existing line, use a clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter. For clean water in a small pump skid, a vortex flow meter can work but it needs straight pipe run.


We have seen customer sites where the meter was installed after a pressure reducing valve with only 2 DN of straight run. The reading was noisy. Place the meter with at least 5 DN upstream and 3 DN downstream for stable output.


Sensor Setup for Leak and Break Detection


Set the flow meter output to 4-20 mA HART or RS485 Modbus. Most control rooms take the 4-20 mA signal into a PLC or a paperless recorder. Define two limits. A high flow alarm catches a broken lateral that floods the zone. A low flow alarm catches a blocked nozzle or a closed valve that is not reported. The baseline should be recorded during a normal cycle with all zones running at design pressure.


Add a pressure transmitter after the pump and before the zone valves. In practice a pipe break shows two signs at the same time. Flow goes up and pressure goes down. If you only watch flow, a zone valve stuck open looks the same as a leak. If you only watch pressure, a pump issue gives a false leak alarm. So use both signals for any buried line.
