Hydraulic Oil Flow Meter 100 L/h Actuator Positioning Loop Specs

Quick Answer: For a 100 L/h hydraulic oil flow meter in an actuator positioning loop, choose an oval gear flow meter with 4-20 mA + HART output. It delivers steady pulses even with high-viscosity oil, pressure up to 400 bar, and small line sizes like DN10. Silver Instruments supplies these meters direct to actuator OEMs and hydraulic power unit builders.

Why the Right Meter Matters for Actuator Control

Actuator positioning loops move valves, rudders, stabilizers, and hatch covers on ships, offshore rigs, and heavy industrial machines. The loop controller compares the commanded position with the actual position. If the flow signal drifts or drops out, the actuator overshoots or hunts. We saw this last year on a crane vessel in Malaysia. Their position loop used a turbine meter. At low flow rates the signal got noisy. The actuator vibrated and wore out the seals three times faster than normal. We swapped in an oval gear meter and the vibration stopped.

Specs for a 100 L/h Hydraulic Oil Flow Meter

Here are the numbers plant engineers and system integrators ask us for. These apply to a meter installed directly in the hydraulic line that feeds the positioning cylinder or hydraulic motor.

Flow range: 0.5 to 100 L/h. Turndown is 1:200. The meter must measure accurately during slow creep moves as well as full-speed slewing. An oval gear meter with 2 mL/rev displacement blanks out the noise at 0.5 L/h.

Fluid: Hydraulic oil ISO VG 32, 46, or 68. Viscosity typically 30 to 300 cP at operating temperature. Oval gear meters hold accuracy down to 1 cP and above 1000 cP.

Accuracy: ±0.5 % of reading over the full 100 L/h range. Repeatability ±0.1 % or better. The loop controller needs repeatable pulses, not just a steady analog signal.

Output: 4-20 mA + HART. HART lets you pull delta flow, totalized volume, and diagnostic registers without breaking the loop. Most actuator positioners accept a 4-20 mA signal directly. You can also get a frequency pulse output if the controller expects pulse-per-liter pulses. Silver Instruments configures the pulse weight at the factory. Tell us how many pulses per liter you need.

Pressure rating: 400 bar continuous. Some subsea actuator lines run at 345 bar. We test every meter body to 600 bar hydrostatic at our workshop in Nanjing before shipping.

Temperature: Oil temperature often runs 50 to 80 °C inside the power unit. The meter works from -20 °C to +120 °C standard. High-temp version to +150 °C is available on request.

Process connection: DN10 or DN15. Threads BSPP, NPT, or SAE flange. Hydraulic actuator circuits mostly use SAE 6 or SAE 4 fittings. We machine the meter block to match your shop standard.

Wetted materials: 316L stainless steel body with PEEK gears and PTFE seals. Standard. No aluminum. Aluminum swells with phosphate ester fluids. 316L deals with water-in-oil ingress and acidic by-products from hot oil.

ATEX / IECEx: Zone 1 Ex ia IIC T4 available. Many actuator systems sit inside ship machinery spaces or oil platform hydraulic rooms where Zone 1 rating is mandatory.

Oval Gear vs. Turbine vs. Coriolis in a Positioning Loop

Turbin

e meters look cheaper. The problem shows up when the actuator creeps. The turbine rotor sticks. The signal drops to zero. The controller thinks no flow is reaching the cylinder. It opens the servo valve further. Then the cylinder jumps. An oval gear meter measures positive displacement. It puts out pulses all the way down to 0.5 L/h. No dead band.

Coriolis mass meters work great. They measure mass directly regardless of oil temperature and grade. But a DN10 or DN15 Coriolis meter costs 5 to 8 times more than an oval gear meter. Most actuator loops just need a repeatable volume signal. Oval gear gives you that at a price point a machine builder can absorb in every power unit.

Gear type meters are also compact. A DN10 oval gear meter is about 130 mm face-to-face. That fits between the servo valve manifold and the cylinder port without re-routing hard piping.

How We Help Actuator OEMs and System Builders

We work with hydraulic system builders in Vietnam, Indonesia, Nigeria, and the UAE. They send us the P&ID and the oil data sheet. We pre-set the meter pulse scaling and test it with a reference oil at your operating viscosity. You get a ready-to-mount meter. No field programming needed.

One Indonesian steering gear builder asked us to supply 35 meters per year with a dual-channel output. Channel 1 is 4-20 mA for the actuator positioner. Channel 2 is a frequency pulse for the PLC totalizer. We did it. The meter body did not change. We added a second electronics board inside the transmitter housing.

FAQ

Can this meter measure bidirectional flow?
Yes. The oval gear rotates both ways. You get a signed output. We configure forward flow as positive and reverse flow as negative on the 4-20 mA span if your loop controller needs it.

How do you handle air bubbles in hydraulic oil?
Small entrained bubbles pass through without locking the gears. A slug of foam will cause a temporary spike in flow reading. We recommend a small air eliminator installed 10 pipe diameters upstream if your tank return line introduces foam.

What if the oil changes from ISO VG 32 to VG 68 between maintenance cycles?
An oval gear meter measures volume regardless of viscosity. You do not need to recalibrate. The K-factor stays within ±0.3 % of the factory setting across that viscosity shift.

Can I use this for phosphate ester hydraulic fluid?
Yes. Specify FKM seals instead of PTFE or EPDM. We build the meter with FKM and 316L wetted parts. Do not use an aluminum body meter with phosphate ester. We never sell aluminum meters for hydraulic oil anyway.

What is the lead time for a custom DN6 oval gear meter with ATEX?
6 to 8 weeks for ATEX-certified units. Non-ATEX meters ship in 2 to 3 weeks. We air freight small orders to Singapore, Dubai, Perth, and Auckland every Friday.
