Mag Flow & Magflow Technologies: Industrial Solid

Mag Flow and Magflow Technologies: Solid-State Sensing Without Pressure Drop

Quick Answer: A mag flow meter measures conductive liquids with no moving parts. Silver Automation Instruments supplies these meters with solid-state sensing and full bore flow tubes. In most cases pressure drop across a DN100 meter stays below 0.05 bar.

Why No Pressure Drop Matters on Industrial Sites

In many process lines, every bar of pressure loss increases pump energy cost. A mag flow meter does not use an orifice plate or a turbine. Because the bore matches the pipe, the meter adds almost no restriction. We have seen this on customer sites many times. A wastewater plant in Mexico replaced a wafer orifice flow meter with a DN150 mag flow meter from Silver Instruments. The outlet pressure at the aeration basin rose by 0.08 bar without changing the pump speed.

Here is the thing. No pressure drop also helps with slurry or viscous liquids. You do not push the fluid through a narrow throat. A mag flow meter keeps the flow path straight. That reduces clogging on sludge and food pulp. Most engineers skip this part when sizing a meter. But it matters after the line runs for six months.

How Solid-State Sensing Works in a Mag Flow Meter

The working principle is Faraday law. A magnetic field passes through the flow tube. Conductive liquid acts as the moving conductor. Two electrodes pick up an induced voltage. The converter turns that voltage into a flow rate. There are no gears and no seals. You may see the term Magflow Technologies in technical notes about solid-state mag flow sensing. The core idea is the same. The sensor coil and converter handle the signal without floats or paddles.

Silver Automation Instruments builds mag flow meters in DN15 to DN2000 sizes. Standard accuracy is 0.5 percent of reading. Optional calibration gives 0.2 percent of reading. Outputs include 4-20 mA HART, pulse, and RS485 Modbus. The converter can run on 220 V AC or 24 V DC. For hazardous areas, we supply ATEX Zone 1 versions with flameproof or increased safety housing. The sensor body supports PTFE, hard rubber, or PFA liners. Electrode choices include 316L, Hastelloy C, titanium, and tantalum.

Because the meter is full bore, pressure drop stays near zero. But the fluid must be conductive. Standard meters need at least 5 µS/cm. For low conductivity fluids below 5 µS/cm, you need a high gain converter or a different measurement technology.

Fluid Data and Process Limits

Mag flow meters work well with water, wastewater, seawater, acids, caustic, slurries, and food products that conduct electricity. For water and wastewater, a hard rubber liner and 316L electrodes are common. For a seawater desalination plant, we often quote PTFE liner with Hastelloy C electrodes. A paint manufacturer in Vietnam ordered a DN80 PTFE lined mag flow meter for diluted acid slurry. The line pressure was 4.2 bar. The conductivity ranged from 8 µS/cm to 14 µS/cm. The reading stayed steady after three months of operation.

Temperature and pressure limits depend on the liner and electrode material. Standard PTFE liners handle 120 °C. PFA liners can handle 180 °C. Hard rubber liners are limited to 80 °C. Pressure ratings run from PN16 to PN100. Flow velocity should stay between 0.1 m/s and 10 m/s for normal accuracy. Below 0.1 m/s, the signal becomes too weak. Above 10 m/s, the liner may wear faster on abrasive slurries.

Mag Flow Meter Installation and Grounding

Mag flow meters need a straight pipe upstream and downstream. For a DN100 meter, keep 5D straight pipe before the meter and 2D after the meter. This rule changes if you have a pump or control valve close to the sensor. In practice, most engineers skip this part until the reading jumps. Then they find that a butterfly valve was installed too close to the electrode plane.

Grounding is also important. The meter must be grounded to the process pipe. Silver Instruments provides grounding rings for plastic or lined pipes. If the pipe is metal and unlined, standard grounding rings may not be needed. But for plastic pipes, install grounding rings on both sides. Otherwise the induced voltage can float and the reading becomes noisy.

FAQ: Mag Flow Meters and Solid-State Sensors

Does a mag flow meter work with pure water?

No. Pure water has very low conductivity. You need at least 5 µS/cm for a standard mag flow meter. For demineralized water below 5 µS/cm, ask us about high gain converters.

What is the minimum pipe size for a mag flow meter?

Silver Instruments supplies mag flow meters from DN15 up to DN2000. DN15 is small enough for pilot plants and chemical dosing lines. DN2000 covers large water transmission mains.

Can a mag flow meter be used in hazardous areas?

Yes. We supply ATEX Zone 1 versions with flameproof or increased safety housing. The converter can be remote mounted. Tell us the gas group and temperature class when you send the inquiry.

How much pressure drop does a mag flow meter create?

Almost none. Because the meter bore equals the pipe bore, pressure loss is normally below 0.05 bar on DN100 lines. Slurries and viscous fluids can add a small loss if the liner becomes coated, but that is not a meter restriction.

What should I check before requesting a mag flow meter price?

Prepare the fluid type, conductivity, temperature, pressure, pipe size, and flow range. Also note the output signal you need, such as 4-20 mA HART or RS485 Modbus. Send us these details and we will return a quote with lead time.
